The history
of the Orpheus Male Chorus
of Phoenix contains over a thousand performances in a variety
of venues both here and abroad, as well as thousands of rehearsals
in preparation. The group has performed in 14 countries as well
as numerous cities in the United States. During its history, the
group has received countless awards and acknowledgements, and the
roster of members has numbered well over a thousand since the group's
inception.
The history of Orpheus lies in the heartfelt passion for music and
the arts found in the hearts of its members as well as in the enthusiastic
response they have received from their audiences. This, indeed,
is the true story of the Orpheus Male Chorus of Phoenix. Orpheus
has performed at venues ranging from supermarket openings to the
great Concert Hall of Vienna, Austria. Membership has varied from
as few as 21 during World War II when many members, including the
young director, fought and died in battle, to 100 members with a
list of alternates waiting to perform. Men from all walks of life
have been part of the chorus.
Throughout its history, the Orpheus Male Chorus of Phoenix has relied
on the enthusiastic support of its audiences and benefactors among
whom were governors, senators, congressmen, mayors, and councilmen,
as well as many businesses and generous individuals. Directors have
led for as little as one year to 33 years and have ranged in age
from 24 to 76 years old.
Practice locations, music, and uniforms have varied over the years.
But in the midst of all these variables, one constant stands out
above the rest. The Orpheus Male Chorus of Phoenix has performed
concerts every season since 1929-1930, making it the longest-continually
performing choral organization in the state of Arizona.
